Which University Does Not Require Any English Proficiency Test in Canada?
In recent years, Canadian colleges have noticed that students who received their degrees from internationally renowned institutions and had English as their medium of instruction typically had a strong command of the language.
As a result, to make it easier for students to apply for higher education in Canada, Canadian colleges must eliminate the necessity of an English Language proficiency exam, such as the Duolingo English Test, which has a minimum score requirement of 100+.
International students applying to Canadian colleges and universities that do not need any English Language Proficiency test score must, nevertheless, show-specific papers to back up their claim of English language competency.
These may contain required credentials, documentation confirming that the first or last degree earned was earned in English, transcripts, and other documents.
Notably, international students must be native English speakers or have completed three or more years of formal degree study in English to be exempt from the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement.
The following universities in Canada do not need ELP:
- Brock University
- Cambrian College
- Carleton University
- Concordia University
- Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador
- Seneca College, Toronto
- University of Winnipeg

- Cambrian College: English Language Proficiency tests are not required for Cambrian College to approve your application. As a result, at Cambrian College, there is no need for costly credentials or hours spent preparing for an English proficiency test.
- Carleton University: You must provide documentation of three years of full-time study at a high school or university in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, or any other nation where English is the predominant language of instruction. Note that many courses have an ESL requirement in addition to English proficiency scores for enrollment.
- Concordia University: Those who do not have English language proficiency scores may enroll in the university’s Intensive English Language Program (IELP) on conditional admission. You are also exempt from the English proficiency score criteria if you have completed an International Baccalaureate Diploma or Degree program using English as the medium of instruction (though this differs as per the program).
- Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador: For admission, you must take an English language competency exam. You may, however, choose to participate in the university’s Intensive English Program (IEP). Before approval of the start of the course, students may apply for both full-time and part-time alternatives for this program.
- Seneca College, Toronto: You may take an intense English language program, such as English Language Training, as proof of your proficiency to have an approved admission. Alternatively, you must have completed two years of academic study in an English-language institution.
- University of Winnipeg: The university has its own required English Language Program (ELP), and you must pass it with the required score. Students may apply for both full-time and part-time options for this program before acceptance of the start of the course.
- University of Saskatchewan The admission procedure at the University of Saskatchewan is very competitive, and their English proficiency standards are more stringent than others. SDS currently only accepts IELTS as part of the application procedure, and no other English examinations are accepted.

What is the Minimum Duolingo English Test Score for Canadian Universities?
Closure of testing centers and suspension of IELTS and other key English examinations may be one of the biggest issues you’re dealing with, especially as your deadlines approach. Luckily, the Duolingo English Test is now widely accepted.
Most Canadian universities will require a minimum score of 115, with higher levels required by particular schools or programs. Some institutions, such as foundation courses, certificate and diploma programs, may need a lower minimum score of roughly 90.
What is a Commendable Duolingo English Test Score?
Duolingo English Test results are valid for two years for both examinations. However, due to pandemic-related test center closures, the Duolingo English Test is well adapted to the present situation.
As a result, for the time being, Duolingo remains a fantastic and convenient alternative to traditional English examinations such as the IELTS.
With that, most top colleges across the globe prefer a Duolingo score of 120 or above. It is comparable to a band score of 7 and higher on the traditional IELTS, according to the Duolingo IELTS conversion.
